This 8-lesson curriculum helps people who are trying to make positive change in their finances—especially if their resources are limited. The lessons address spending choices, tracking spending, starting to save, creating a spending plan, comparing money services, choosing credit, paying debts, and understanding a credit report.
Homebuyer
Education
Considering purchasing a home? This online course with
one-hour, face-to-face follow-up provides first-time homebuyers with information to get in
and keep their homes. It meets the THDA loan requirement. Get the class sooner
– not later. The pre-purchase course makes you aware of things to know during the purchase process; the post-purchase course provides information to help participants be successful homeowners. Classes are online at https://thda.ehomeamerica.org/.
SNAP
Employment and Training
For groups serving SNAP benefits: Jobs are
available but employers struggle to find skilled workers. People want to work
but may not be aware of the skills they need. The goal of this 4-session
program is to help individual reach their employment potential and become
self-sufficient. A case management component can allow funding for testing
fees, etc.
Credit Education
Individuals and families working to improve their credit can schedule one-on-one meetings to strategize improvement plans. The first step is checking one's credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com. Foods, Nutrition and Health
Expanded Foods and
Nutrition Education Program
Targeted to families with young
children, families receive a series of lessons on how to choose and prepare
healthy foods. Education also focuses on selecting and preparing nutritious
foods, managing food resources wisely, handling foods safely, and participating
in regular physical activity.
EFNEP has been conducted in
Tennessee for more than 45 years and has proven to be a program with significant
impacts. A cost-benefit analysis of EFNEP in Tennessee showed that for every
dollar spent to implement the program, $2.48 is saved on food expenditures.
This can reduce the need for emergency food assistance and save money for other

Grocery store tours
Looking for the healthiest
food—especially on a budget? Come to a FREE grocery store tour where you’ll
learn to read food labels, compare unit prices, select fruits, vegetables and
meats, and identify whole grain products and dairy products. Tuesdays, 8:30 to
10 a.m. in Jackson. Locations change.

Diabetes
Following an introductory session, A1C and cholesterol
testing and consultation from Union University nursing and pharmacy students
kick off this 8-part program that can meet once a month or every week for 8
weeks. Purpose is to improve diabetes self-care and reduce negative outcomes
for those with Type 2 diabetes; reduce the progression from pre-diabetes to
Type 2; and assist people at risk of diabetes to implement lifestyle changes
and avoid diabetes. The Jackson-Madison County Health Department is also a
partner in the program.
