KNOXVILLE – The beginning of the year always brings resolutions, goals and plans to change habits. With the help of University of Tennessee Extension agents Sarah Poole and Tennille Short, set goals and resolutions the S.M.A.R.T. way.

“We all think about and strive to do better in keeping resolutions and goals at this time of year,” says Sarah Poole, UT Extension agent in Crockett County. “But I’ve probably never kept a resolution.”

“One year, I did keep my resolution. I gave up caffeine,” says Tennille Short, UT Extension agent in Haywood County. “I can live without it. Now I have to have water first thing in the morning.”

“Resolutions or goals can be hard to keep because they’re so broad. We don’t hone in on the one aspect that could be the game changer,” continued Poole. “But with S.M.A.R.T. goals, big resolutions are broken down into something manageable and realistic.”

Hear more about S.M.A.R.T. goals in the new UTIA podcast “Bringing It Home, with Sarah and Tennille.”

Listeners can tune in weekly for tips from Poole and Short, both family and consumer science agents in their respective counties. To access the podcast, log on to anchor.fm or search for “UTIAg” in podcast apps Anchor, Castbox, Stitcher, Apple Podcasts or PodBean.
