The 2013 Multi-County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale drew an excited crowd to the Appalachian fairgrounds on Saturday, August 3rd.  4-H’ers began reporting with their birds prior to 8:00 am. By the 9:00 am sale time the bleachers in the livestock barn being used for the event were filled with excited youth, their families and supporting buyers.  A total of 21 youth from Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties each brought back a pen of five pullets for the event.  The birds were either a black or golden sex-linked breed, both of which lay large brown eggs. Some were already laying hens, as exhibited by eggs on display.

Volunteer judges carefully worked through the barn and chose their top pens of birds.  This year the youth were divided into their respective counties for judging purposes.  The top pens of pullets this year were awarded as follows:  Unicoi County Champion-Kaden Allen and Reserve Champion-Grace Clark; Washington County Champion-MacKenzie Cooper and Reserve Champion-Mattie Roark; Sullivan County Champion-Milena Cressman and Reserve Champion- Madalyn Herrmann.

The pullets were auctioned by Mr. Tim Buckingham following the announcement of champions.  The average price per bird was over $14 and the sale brought in $1400 for the 4-H program.  The high selling pen raised by Mattie Roark of Washington County sold for $25 per bird.  Monies will be used to reward the youth who participated this year and to help with the purchase of chicks for the 2014 4-H Chick Chain.

On behalf of the 4-H Extension Agents involved thank you to all the families of youth in the poultry project this year, our judges, auctioneer, sponsors, the Appalachian fairgrounds and most of all everyone who came out to purchase pullets this year.  The 4-H Chick Chain is a component of the Poultry Project, one of the seven 4-H Animal Science Project areas.  The project helps youth learn to set goals, responsibility and decision making.  For more information on 4-H or how to participate in the 4-H Chick Chain next year contact your local UT/TSU Extension office.
