Description

In Davidson County, any landowner with at least five acres of land can own a horse. The ability to own a horse is a privilege that carries many responsibilities. At a minimum, horses rely on the owner to provide food, shelter and health care, along with physical and mental interaction. A lack of considerable knowledge of equine maintenance and pasture management can result in unintentional suffering to the horse, which can result in legal issues with regards to animal cruelty. The Tennessee Master Horse Program (TMHP) is designed to provide a foundation of science-based information applicable to all horse owners and those interested in equine well-being. Using a combination of classroom discussion and hands-on teaching, the program covers a wide variety of equine-related topics to equip attendees with the knowledge needed to implement best management practices on their operations and improve equine care. The driving force behind the TMHP is to raise the level of education and improve overall success of horse owners and producers within the state. Contact David Cook at dcook5@utk.edu
