4-H ENROLLMENT FOR 2008-2009

The first official SUPER roll-over took place September 2, 2008. Enrollment data for the new year can be entered. If you have new clubs or any changes in the clubs you used last year, please make additions/changes before you start activating enrollees. In SUPER, select Enrollment and click on “Manage.”

If you have returning members you will need to:
1. Search for the enrollee. Make sure you select to include inactive files for search.
2. Open the enrollee’s contact information by clicking on his/her name.
3. Click edit on the contact info screen
4. Change the enrollee’s status to active.
5. Change the grade and update any other information if needed such as address, phone, etc.
6. Click save.
7. Now click the club/group.
8. Change the club (if appropriate) and projects.
9. Click save.

Several agents have expressed some confusion as to what date to use for new activities and awards entered. Information contained in the 2008 Annual 4-H Enrollment Report has data entered from 2007-2008. Once the annual enrollment report is locked, that data will not change. All data entered after the roll-over will appear in the 2009 Annual 4-H Enrollment Report, regardless of the date you utilize. You can use 2008 until December 31 and start using 2009 on January 1, 2009.

Agents also shared difficulty in entering activities from the perspective of time and manpower. Agents have requested having the capability to assign an activity to a group of members at one time. This option will be considered. Please continue to enter activity information in a consistent and systematic manner as office capabilities allow.

Also, all camp registration (junior camp, junior high camp, regional All Star conferences, regional clothing camps, county day camps, etc.) should be processed through the Training/Registration module.

Joseph Donaldson created a video specific to 4-H enrollment. It is available via Online @ UT at online.utk.edu/. I highly recommend agents and those responsible for entering data in the Enrollment module see this video.

ENTRIES DUE FOR STATE FALL JUDGING EVENTS

State Fall Judging Day will be Saturday, October 11 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Registration will be at 1:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Hollingsworth (Plant Science) Auditorium with the competition starting at 2:00 p.m. An awards banquet will be held at 6:00 p.m.

Competition will be for senior teams in consumer decision-making, dairy products judging, forestry judging, outdoor meat cookery, plant and seed identification and poultry judging. Junior high competition will not be offered on the state level.

The dairy products, plant and seed identification and poultry judging contests are non-qualifying events. Team members should be in the 9th-12th grades on January 1, 2008 in order to be eligible. There is no limit as to the number of teams that may participate from a county.

Participants in the consumer decision-making, forestry judging and outdoor meat cookery contests will be determined by regional events. The top four (4) forestry teams per region and the top three (3) outdoor meat cookery teams (plus any of the four specie winners if they were not a member of a regional-qualifying team) will advance to state competition.

In order to prepare for the judging day, we need to know how many are coming. There is a preregistration requirement for all teams. We must receive a COMPLETED Entry and Score Form (F615) for each team and/or individual participating. Please send this information to Steve Sutton, State 4-H Office, 2621 Morgan Circle, Room 205, Knoxville, TN 37996-4510 by October 1.

Your completed forms will be your reservation for the awards banquet on October 11. Cost for the meal is $10.00 per person. This includes contestants, coaches, parents and other guests. You may pay at the registration table as you arrive. Counties will need to be responsible for any meals not cancelled by October 5. Guest reservations should come in with your team’s entry form. Extension staff meals will be taken care of internally.

FISHFUL THINKING

Fishful Thinking is a website that provides information regarding optimism and resilience for children. The site provides articles for parents and activities for youth. The latest edition has an article on resilience titled "Resilience: Ingredient List ." In the article, resilience is described as "the ability to bounce back from setbacks, to learn from failure, to be motivated by challenges and to believe in your own abilities to deal with stress and difficulties in life." 4-H may not use this terminology, but this is certainly what takes place as we work with youth through projects, activities, events and competition. Dr. Karen Reivich describes seven ingredients related to resilience. The seven ingredients listed are:

* emotional awareness and control
* impulse control
* realistic optimism
* flexible thinking
* self-efficacy
* empathy
* reaching out

At the end of the article there are some activities and additional information for parents.

You can access the article at fishfulthinking.com/tools/moreinfo/resilience.aspx. This website has activities and information that is well worth spending some time and looking at what it has to offer.

NFL TAKE A PLAYER TO SCHOOL

The NFL Take a Player to School program is a joint initiative between JCPenney Afterschool and the National Football League centers on inspiring youth to make the most of their in-school and afterschool time by making smart and healthy choices and by setting goals and working to achieve them. There is no purchase necessary and the program is open to all kids ages 6-13.

Between July 28 and September 29 kids can pick up an entry form at any JCPenney store or go to jcp.com or NFLRUSH.com to register (no purchase necessary). Thirty-four lucky students from around the country will have the opportunity to ride to school with an NFL player in a limousine and join him in leading their class during a special Take a Player to School gym class. The players will share personal experiences with the students and emphasize the important roles that academics, health and fitness played in turning their dreams into reality.

PUBLICIZE YOUR NATIONAL 4-H WEEK CELEBRATION

4-H week bannerNational 4-H Week is October 5-11, 2008. "Keeping it Green" is the theme of National 4-H Week. Has your county made plans for celebrating and promoting 4-H? We want to recognize Tennessee counties who celebrate National 4-H Week. Simply email the State 4-H Office at dsarver@tennessee.edu with a brief narrative of your counties’ National 4-H Week celebration, and send pics. Decide who will be responsible for emailing the narrative and pictures after your celebration is completed, so there will be no duplication. Your celebration will be publicized on the Tennessee 4-H website.

In addition, the 2008 National 4-H Week promotional kit is now available for download and customization for use in your communities. Visit www.4-HBrandNetwork.org to access templates for bookmarks, flyers, certificates and much more! This year's theme, "Keeping it Green," shows how 4-H is bridging old ideas with new to teach youth environmental stewardship and connecting youth to science-related issues. The green theme also showcases 4-H pride and is a direct connection to our well know brand emblem.

This year's National 4-H Week also includes the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day on October 8, 2008. A promotional kit along with details on the 4-H National Science Experiment will be added to www.4-HBrandNetwork.org next week for you to use in your communities. TEAM AMERICA ROCKETRY CHALLENGE 2009

Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) is an aerospace design and engineering event for teams of U.S. secondary school students (7th through 12th grades) run by the NAR and the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). Teams can be sponsored by schools or by non-profit youth organizations such as Scouts, 4-H or Civil Air Patrol (but not the NAR or other rocketry organizations).

The goal of TARC is to motivate students to pursue aerospace as an exciting career field. It is co-sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers, 4-H, the Department of Defense and NASA. The event involves designing and building a model rocket (3.3 pounds or less, using NAR-certified model rocket motors) that carries a payload of one Grade A Large egg (oriented sideways across the rocket's diameter) for a precise flight duration of 45 seconds and to an altitude of exactly 750 feet (measured by an onboard altimeter), and that then returns the eggs to earth uncracked. Onboard timers are allowed; radio-control is not.

High-school rocketeers Team America Rocketry Challenge 2009's target flight duration of 45 seconds is measured from the moment of rocket liftoff until the egg payload lands. The target flight altitude of 750 feet is measured by an onboard altimeter. The top 100 teams from among all those who have entered will meet in a final fly-off competition on May 16, 2009 at Great Meadow, The Plains, Virginia. These top 100 teams will be selected based on the duration and altitude scores reported from local qualification flights that they conduct in front of an NAR senior (adult) member observer at their choice of time up until the flight deadline of April 6, 2009.

The rules, entry forms, contestant handbook and other details about TARC 2009 will be posted on the AIA's website on September 3, 2008. Registration will be open from September 3 until December 31, 2008, or until 750 teams register, whichever comes first. See www.nar.org/TAchallenge.html for more details.
