2008 TENNESSEE 4-H TECHNOLOGY CAMP A SUCCESS

The 8th annual Tennessee 4-H Tech Camp was held at Ridley 4-H Center in Columbia, June 30-July 3. 33 campers from across the state attended this year’s camp. Campers attended classes on digital photography, creating and editing digital videos, global positioning systems and rocketry. Classes were taught by specialists, agents and volunteers; they were assisted by three conference assistants.

We ended the week with the first ever Technology Camp Video Awards. Awards were given in best editing, best screenplay and best picture. All of the teams created some very interesting and entertaining videos. You can view all of the videos the youth created at http://rc4-h.blogspot.com/

COMMUNICATION KALEIDOSCOPE ACTIVITY PROVIDES LEADERSHIP SKILL TRAINING

I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you another leadership activity that you can use with your 4-H members. This activity is entitled Communication Kaleidoscope. There are three parts to this activity. The first part is a Power Point presentation complete with presenter notes, ideas and additional resources. The Power Point can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/CommunicationKaleidoscope.ppt. The second part to this activity is a handout entitled “Communication Style Inventory.” It can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/CommunicationStyleInventory.pdf. The third part is the “Communication Kaleidoscope” handout which details all of the communication colors. It can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/CommunicationKaleidoscope.pdf.

Effective and meaningful communication is essential to leadership. The purpose of this activity is to help participants identify the four major communication styles, understand their personal communication style preferences, and learn how to communicate with others... especially those who have different communication styles.

As a result of this activity, 4-H’ers will be better able to answer the following communications life skills questions:

1. I can understand and follow directions.
2. I am a better listener.
3. I can share my ideas through writing.
4. It is easier to express my opinions to someone with a different view than my own.

This activity was specifically designed for advanced level 4-H members. It works well for adult-level training as well. I hope you find the activity useful. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, please contact me at lbelew@utk.edu or 865-974-7239.

FORMER 4-H CONGRESS GOVERNOR NAMED NATIONAL FBLA PRESIDENT

Congratulations to Joseph Riley, a 4-H member from McMinn County and the 2008 Tennessee 4-H Congress Governor. Joseph was elected by 7,000 of his peers as the National President of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at the National Leadership Conference held June 26-29 in Atlanta.

FBLA is an education association with a quarter million students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. The National Leadership Conference is an annual event with thousands of FBLA members competing in leadership events, attending leadership workshops and competing for scholarships.

We know the skills Joseph has gained through 4-H will enable him to be successful in this new leadership role. We wish him much success as he leads this national organization.

FREE FCC DIGITAL TV KITS: PLEASE ACCEPT SHIPMENTS

Many of you requested Federal Communications Commission (FCC) digital television transition kits to use at your local fairs and community events. However, our FCC liaison has informed us that many of the shipments are being returned. There have been an overwhelming number of returns, and we have not yet determined the reason for this.

Please do not refuse or send back unwanted items for the time being. Please accept the kits while the FCC finds a better location/address to have these items shipped back to D.C. - at the FCC’s expense. The FCC will most likely send out FEDEX mailing labels for unwanted items so there will be no cost to you for holding the materials until a later time.

If you have questions about this, contact our FCC contact Lyle Ishida at Lyle.Ishida@fcc.gov.

ROUNDUP PRESS RELEASE FOR YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER

The 4-H Youth Development Department has created a press release for you to use in your local newspaper to highlight your county delegates’ trip to State 4-H Roundup. The press release is a general overview of the purpose of Roundup and the activities and events the delegates will participate in next week and can be found at 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/RoundupPressRelease.doc.
