4-H CONSUMER DECISION MAKING JUDGING

Many of you have worked with the 4-H consumer decision making judging contest over the past couple of years. This is an excellent opportunity to involve senior 4-H members in a judging experience.

The 2008 consumer decision making, as well as the contest dates, have been posted to the Web site at central.tennessee.edu/4h/files/cdmfiles/GuidelinesandRules_08.pdf. The categories for the contest are listed, and each has a link to the study material. There are twelve categories for the contest. However, 4-H members will only study eight categories for the regional contest. They should NOT study the categories developed by their region. The list of the categories and the region responsible are listed under the 2008 rules. Complete information about this activity can be found at central.tennessee.edu/4h/judge/cdm.htm.

The dates for the contest are:
Western Region - September 6, 2008
Central Region - September 10, 2008
Eastern Region - September 6, 2008
State Contest - October 11, 2008 (Knoxville)
National Contest - January 7-11, 2009 (Denver, Colorado)

A committee has been working to develop guidelines for the regional and state contests, as well as study materials. This committee has done an excellent job in coordinating this educational event. The committee members are:

Annette Cole, Stewart County
Heather Deckard, Benton County
Kathy Finley, Robertson County
Christina Carr, Clay County
Donna Calhoun, Polk County
Carlene Welch, Knox County
Linda Bower, Eastern Region Office
Patsy Ezell, Central Region Office
Lynn Brookins, Western Region Office
Justin Crowe, 4-H Youth Development Department
Alice Ann Moore, 4-H Youth Development Department

Special thanks to Jim Stewart, Central Region program leader, for updating the Web site with all the 2008 information. Thanks also go Shirley Hastings, Associate Dean; Ann Berry, Assistant Professor; and Dena Wise, Associate Professor for working with the committee to provide subject matter expertise and guidance.

The key to success for any activity is participation so please work with your 4-H members to encourage them to try this activity. Again, it is an excellent way to encourage senior 4-H involvement.

If you have questions about this contest, contact any committee member or the program leader in your region for more information.

4-H SET IDEAS: JETSTREAM, NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ONLINE WEATHER SCHOOL

What's a “wall cloud?” What is meant by “K-index?” Ever heard of “keraunophobia?” These are just a few things you can teach your 4-H members by using JetStream. JetStream, the National Weather Service Online Weather School, is designed to help educators, emergency managers or anyone interested in learning about weather and weather safety.

Included in this amazing Web site is a section called “JetStream Learning Lessons” (www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream//append/lessonplans.htm). This section has lesson plans designed to teach students in the areas of the atmosphere, the ocean, global circulations, synoptic (viewing) meteorology, thunderstorms, lightning and weather on the Web. The home page for JetStream is www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream//index.htm.

P.S. - Keraunophobia is the fear of thunder and lightning.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL 4-H ELECTRIC CAMP

The 17th annual Tennessee 4-H Electric Camp was held on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, June 24-27, with 275 campers in attendance. Delegates explored the world of energy, electricity and the basic sciences through fun-filled, hands-on learning experiences.

The Western Region boasted the largest delegation with 159 members attending. The Central Region had 73 delegates; and the Eastern Region had 43. Hickman County had the largest county delegation with 33 members. In addition to the delegates, 12 senior 4-H members attended as camp assistants.

The event is sponsored jointly by UT Extension, the Tennessee Electric Cooperative, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and several local municipal power suppliers.

NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION JAKES PROGRAM

To date, National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) chapters have provided more than two million dollars in support of 4-H around the nation. Like 4-H, NWTF engages youth in wildlife conservation, safety and land stewardship ethics through youth development opportunities.

The NWTF would like to expand its support by providing FREE JAKES/Xtreme JAKES memberships and magazines to 4-H members currently enrolled in 4-H Shooting Sports or 4-H conservation and wildlife education programs. If you’re a 4-H youth leader and would like to sign up your 4-H members for FREE JAKES memberships, go to http://www.nwtf.org/jakes/educators/partners.html. Your request(s) must include:

* Youth Leader Name
* 4-H Member Name(s)
* 4-H Member Age(s)
* 4-H Member Mailing Address(es)

NWTF understands that youth - especially young outdoors guys and gals - are key to the future of wildlife conservation in America. Like 4-H, they share a deep commitment to the development of young people in an environment that fosters safety and a land stewardship ethic, while also engaging youth in the great outdoors through wildlife conservation and the shooting sports.

NON-COMPETITORS ACTIVITY AT 4-H ROUNDUP

Non-competing delegates attending State 4-H Roundup will have an opportunity to put into action the 4-H All-Star motto, “Service”, as they visit local community agencies to engage in service learning projects. On Tuesday morning, during project interviews, these delegates will provide assistance to two local organizations, Second Harvest Food Bank (www.secondharvestknox.org/) and Beardsley Farm (www.beardsleyfarm.com/). Please encourage non-competing delegates from your county to bring a set of “work” clothes and close-toed shoes for this project.
