4-H MILITARY PROGRAM RESOURCES
Many of you work with youth who have parents who are either active military or who come from a military family. The 4-H Military Partnerships Web site has some excellent resources for use in county programs. These online lesson plans and resource guides can be found at www.4-hmilitarypartnerships.org and focus on healthy lifestyles, babysitting, service learning, etc. These are free to download and use. If you have an interest in the military 4-H babysitting material, please let me know. We have a limited amount of this curriculum in our office and would be happy to share with counties who have an interest.

KIDS COUNT 2008
The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 19th annual Kids Count Data Book was released on June 12. The annual data book is a national and state-by-state profile of the well-being of America’s children that seeks to enrich discussions concerning ways to secure better futures for all kids. The data book ranks states on 10 key measures and provides data on the economic, health, education and social conditions of America’s children and families.
This year, the Kids Count Data Book essay, “A Road Map for Juvenile Justice Reform,” looks at the nearly 100,000 children confined to juvenile facilities on any given night in the United States and what can be done to reduce unnecessary and inappropriate detention and incarceration and increase opportunities for positive youth development and community safety. This information will be an excellent resource for each of you as you plan for and write your 2009 individual action agenda (IAA). Learn more and download the report at www.kidscount.org.

TEEN TRENDSETTERS™ READING MENTORS
Teen Trendsetters™ Reading Mentors is an opportunity for high school and elementary school students to grow together through a rewarding program that builds better futures for today’s youth. The program pairs high school teens one-on-one with elementary students. They spend an hour a week together enjoying books and other educational activities.
Lead Teen Trendsetters™ are now being recruited here in Tennessee. Selected teens will attend an all expenses paid national training summit this fall. Teen volunteers will be selected based on essays submitted via their Web site and teacher recommendations. Students must exhibit strong leadership skills and the willingness to commit to the program for at least one year.
The teen mentors are provided excellent tools to prepare them for this rewarding mentoring project. They are trained to work with a specialized 40-minute curriculum and provided the books that become part of the elementary student's home library.
Teens will meet with their students once a week for 20 weeks during the next school year. For more information about Teen Trendsetters™ please visit the Web site at www.vusattrm.org or call 850-562-5300. The deadline to apply is July 25, 2008.

WOOL AND WOOLLIES REVUE COMPETITION SCHEDULED FOR AREA FAIRS
This fall boys and girls will have the opportunity to participate in the Wool and Woollies Revue at several area fairs across the state. This is an excellent opportunity for your 4-H members enrolled in clothing, fashion revue and livestock projects; but would certainly not be limited to these individuals only.
Contestants need not be 4-H members, but must be under 21 years of age as of January 1, 2008. During the competition, entrants must lead a registered ewe which has been fitted and trained to show at halter. The ewe does not have to be owned by the entrant, and the show management will be more than glad to help make arrangements for your 4-H members to find a ewe to lead. The entrant must wear a garment made of wool or a wool blend. The garment does not have to be constructed by the entrant.
Contestants are divided into classes according to their age. Classes vary from contest to contest. You should check the fair catalogues for specific details. The following standards are used when judging the classes: entrant’s garment (40%); poise and appearance (30%); and control and presentation of the animal (30%). A special class is offered in the Wool and Woollies Revue at the Tennessee Valley Fair. Contestants under six years of age as of January 1, 2008, will compete in a pairs competition with an older partner. A class for adults will be held at the Appalachian Fair giving parents, leaders and even agents an opportunity to participate.
The Wool and Woollies Revue has been a very popular activity across the state. We hope you will encourage your 4-H members to participate. For additional information and/or entry forms, please contact the following:
